Our This Week in Metal post collects our thoughts on music released in or around this week in the music world. We cover mostly metal, but we consider other genres to allow our writers poseur flexibility. Follow us on Instagram too!
Scuttlegoat's Curmudgeonly Critiques
Slam might be hard to understand for the casual listener, the poseur and the weenie, but it is undeniable that, while the technique on how to Slam is a pretty narrow and well defined spot, there are many roads to Rome. But are those roads made of stone? Embrace Your Punishment!
When people say Deathgrind, they can mean many different things. It is a hybrid genre, after all, and it can run the gamut from what is basically punk with growls to relentless, chaotic blasting. Walking Corpse however fit into a third category. Relentlessly supplying riff after riff after riff, they take no prisoners. Their Arms, Our Hearse.
Metalligator's Chomping Commentary
This self titled release is decidedly mood based, as it makes use of droning beats and looping synths that sound like calm organ-led melodies to evoke a facsimile of Devotional music. Industrialized devotion.
Blár's Beckoning Blurb
Do you need a palate cleanser after listening to all that Vortexectomy, Parasitic Ejaculation and Cattle Decapitation? Then I present to you, Laurel Halo, the musician behind Atlas, one of the best Ambient records of 2023. "Ugh, Ambient" you might say, but don't be so quick to dismiss this beautiful and apprehensive kaleidoscope of sounds. Take a walk on the mild side.
Cosmo's Chaotic Curveball
A new challenger for “most boring black metal act in 2023” has entered the arena, however, and its name is Demoncy. An old school Black Metal band from the USA, Demoncy had a brief period of activity in the 1990s before vanishing for the better part of a decade until the early 2010s. Black Star Gnosis is their first outing on the modern juggernaut label of the underground, Dark Descent Records. Why won't they reply to our asks for a victory speech?
