NYC raw hardcore outfit Junta started off in 2016, however as their approach to music has been utterly unorthodox, here they are releasing their first self titled LP in 2024. The band prefer to use their music as a weapon of mass education, thus aligning with an aim beyond conventional entertainment. Junta’s journey is not just about the music they release; it’s a deliberate exploration into the intersection of raw energy, political consciousness, and a commitment to a deeper purpose.
Navigating Junta proved to be a challenge as I grappled with the relationship between music and message. While what Junta are trying to achieve is commendable, there is a sense that the music falls somewhat short of delivering the message with the impactful force it potentially could. With its gritty feeling, the album places the listener face to face with the world’s misery. The surprisingly chiseled tin can sound however acts like double-edged sword; while it adds to the rawness, it also leads to a sense of uniformity, occasionally making it challenging to tell one track from another. The band’s dedication to a singular idea is upright, yet it treads a fine line between creativity and a safe sound.
In the absence of compelling elements, even a two-minute song can feel like trudging through mud. At times it feels as if their dedication to the message has overshadowed any sonic exploration. The album rides on waves of rage, sometimes carried forward by a bass that has no business sounding so filthy—this dynamic atmosphere likely thrives in a live performance. However, despite this potential, Junta quickly loses its initial allure and becomes somewhat oppressive over its 20 minute duration. The intensity and repetitiveness transforms into a grating experience, and I wish the band left a bit of room for a more nuanced musical exploration (always leave a little room). But fret not, for Junta don’t much seem to care about what you think about their debut. While the face smacking impact might not be as powerful as I’d wished, the album offers a window into world where musical honesty and a relentless message take center stage. It’s just a shame maintaining a lasting engagement was not one of the band’s priorities.
